Arsenal fans have local bragging right once more, after the Gunners beat Tottenham 1-0 in
the first north London derby of the new campaign.
Although it not being the polished performance that the Emirates Stadium faithful would hope
for, the three points will be welcomed by Arsene Wenger .
Here are five things that became apparent about Arsenal in their victory.
Ramsey can be a world beater
The Arsenal midfield were always set for a challenge when Tottenham came to the Emirates, as
Paulinho, Mousa Dembele and Etienne Capoue were selected in the Spurs iboiler room. Despite
the international calibre of his opponents, Aaron Ramsey was the best midfielder on show.
The Wales international mixed his trademark lung-busting runs with a combativeness and
range of passing, and has had a wonderful start to this season. Ramsey is a key man for
Arsenal and can be a star for the side.
Koscielny’s importance to Arsenal
Laurent Koscielny returned to the home side’s back four and put in a no-nonsense
performance to show his importance to the team.
Per Mertesacker has certainly improved
after a shaky start to his time in England,
but Koscielny is the side’s defensive
leader. He dealt with Soldado well and
made a number of important challenges
and clearances. Even when Thomas
Vermaelen returns to fitness, the France
international must play for the Gunners .
Gibbs a testament to the Arsenal youth
set-up
Kieran Gibbs got the nod over Nacho
Monreal at left-back and put in an
accomplished and assured performance in
the Arsenal defence. Many will expect the
Spaniard to be first choice when fully fit,
but Gibbs showed that he has the ability to be a consistent starter for the side.
Gibbs was caught in a two-on-one situation a number of times and did well against Andros
Townsend and Kyle Walker. The youth product could well be a mainstay for Arsenal at left-
back this term.
Giroud worthy of lone attacking role
Olivier Giroud had an up-and-down debut campaign in England last season but is starting to
show just why Arsene Wenger brought him to the club. His fourth goal in as many games
settled the clash in his side’s favour, while his all-round play was impressive.
Giroud can be the main attacking threat for Arsenal for the remainder of the campaign and
looks much more confident than he did last term.
Wenger lacks options
Comparing the Arsenal bench to that of their opponents, the home side lacked real experience
or proven quality in their replacements.
Arsenal fans will hope that the club will be busy in the transfer market today to add an extra
player or two to help cope with injuries or unavailability.
