Importance Of Fathers

Some Sundays ago, father’s day was celebrated around the world. The day is met to recognize fathers and yet-to-be fathers, to appreciate them, give them the honour due them. But unfortunately, most fathers did not know or were not aware of their own day, that they needed to be celebrated. Is it because, they were too busy with work/business? Issues at home? Did not care? Or did not even realize that such a day exist for them?

It is most surprising how women are celebrated on their day, even the fathers are involved in celebrating their mothers, wives, sisters and daughters, they do remember to send messages of love and appreciation to mothers all over but it was their day, and there was no excitement, and even when messages were sent, some fathers, were like “Is it father’s day? Oh! Thank you”. Well, is it that fathers don’t realise the importance of their role in the family? Who they are? What it means to be a father?

Who is a father
According to Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, a father is a male parent of a child, acting as a father to a child, the first man to introduce a new way of thinking about something or of doing something, etc. taken deeply, a father is a biological male parent who has been given the assignment to lead a home.

He is the spiritual head of the family, just as Christ
is the head of the church. In one of the definitions of father in Oxford, he introduces spirituality in the home, being the head. A father is majorly the one that helps to bring forth a child; without the man, a woman can’t get pregnant so, a father helps to bring forth and nurture the children to adulthood to become responsible citizens and leaders of tomorrow.

A father is an important person in the children’s lives, he is very important to both girls and boys, though, you find in some homes they say the girls are closer to their dad while the boys to their mum, it should not be, a father must be there for all the children because they get their identity from him and bear his name. Boys learn how to become men from their fathers, he sets a model of a responsible, disciplined and matured person before his children. He leads, discipline, advises and helps his children to grow in every aspect of life.

Most times, fathers put emphasis on their work and don’t bother to find out what is happening in the lives of their children or engaging them in discussion leaving it to the mothers alone. It is not enough to help bring these children to the world, but should be a part of their lives, spend quality time with your children. Give of yourself, not just money, material things, but your personal attention.

The true test of any father’s leadership does not lie in his social skills, his managerial abilities in the office or how well he conducts or handles himself in public, but it is in the home. It is not about what you say but what you do at home. A good father leaves his imprint on his children for the rest of their lives. He teaches them values for education and you have to communicate it to them by putting them in school, buying books for them and when at home, see your children’s academics results as your result and if you don’t like what you see, seek ways to add value to the child’s academics by getting a lesson teacher or help the child yourself. Take interest in whatever your children are involved in, be a part of it, their hobbies clothes, school project, find a point of connection with them. Schedule a family time like outings and taking vacations.

Statistics from a child psycho psychiatry, 1997, show that children raised without fathers usually perceive themselves as less cognitive and physically competent than their peers, that is why they are twice likely to end up in jail than those from two parent families. Eighty-five per cent (85%) of youths in prisons grew up in a fatherless home. Seventy-one per cent (71%) of school drop-outs come out of fatherless home while eighty percent (80%) of rapists with displaced anger come from fatherless homes. So fathers learn today to create the opportunity to have quality time with your children.
