An ancient tree situated in Ukwu Uko evening market at Umuejinwaoke Umudagu village, Mbieri, Mbaitolu Local Government Area of Imo State, fell on thursday 16th may, claiming the life of over 30 people including two sisters.
The tree which has been in existence for over 200 years, fell during a heavy rainstorm , collapsing on buildings, people buying and selling goods under the tree.
Reports say sixteen other people sustained varying injuries during the incident which was caused by a rainstorm.
According to our source, the unfortunate incident which occurred around 8pm also destroyed the village hall.
“The big tree fell suddenly, killing 3o people on the spot and injuring 16 others. Those injured were taken to the hospital.
“The victims include two sisters, who were selling tomatoes.
The traditional ruler of the community, Eze Godwin Duru, lamented that such a tragic incident had never occurred in the community.
