'Over Three Million Citizens Smoke Tobacco'--Report

The Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) has revealed that an estimated 3.1 million Nigeria adults smoke tobacco with 82 per cent of them knowing it causes serious illness.(Interesting)
The survey which is the first carried-out in Africa makes Nigeria the first country to conduct a survey that looks into the statistics of persons that engage in smoking.
The survey prompted President Goodluck Jonathan to call for "more efficient and effective enforcement of ban of smoking in public places."
The President who was represented by the health minister, Christian Onyebuchi Chukwu, at the official presentation of the GATS report in Abuja, said tobacco is "the only legal consumer product that kills one-third to half of those who use it as intended by its manufacturers, with its victims dying on average 15 years prematurely."
GATS, which sampled nearly 9,000 adults over age 15 years in some 11,000 households across the country, showed even higher prevalence of exposure to second-hand smoke.
