Samsung look set to beat their major rivals to market with the Galaxy GEAR Smartwatch.
Smartwatches are going to be a major growth area over the next year. A whole host of mobile manufacturers are already working on their respective smartwatches : including Apple, Google, Microsoft and Samsung. However, it looks like Samsung could win the race to market with their Galaxy GEAR Smartwatch.
The Samsung Galaxy Gear Smartwatch will be unveiled at IFA 2013 , which takes place in September in Berlin. At least according to Patently Apple , who claimed the new accessory will be unveiled at the event alongside theGalaxy Note 3.
Samsung are keen to beat Apple's
iWatch to market , which should mean we see the Galaxy GEAR available in stores before the end of 2013. That should give it a good head-start on Apple's iWatch , which is expected to launch early next year. They'll still be lagging behind Sony , who recently launched the Sony Smartwatch 2.
Very little is known about the Galaxy GEAR Smartwatch at the current time. Infact, we don't even know whether it'll need to connect to another Samsung Galaxy device, or act as a standalone device. It's pretty unlikely to include a SIM-card slot, so we expect it to be able to connect to a Galaxy smartphone or tablet , enabling users to make calls , receive texts and browse the web.
It could still have some standalone features including the ability to act as a standalone MP3 player or as afitness accessory. Some of the challenges faced when designing a smartwatch include keeping battery life reasonable without adding bulk and ensuring it's waterproof.
We only hope Samsung's Smartwatch looks as stunning as the "Concept" design pictured above. As soon as we get more news about the Galaxy GEAR we'll let you know. Until you might want to checkout all our latest Smartwatch news here !
