Barcelona president, Sandro Rosell has confirmed that manager, Tito Vilanova has stepped down from his role due to a relapse in his ongoing cancer struggle that saw him miss almost three months of the 2012-2013 season.
“FC Barcelona will not travel to Poland on Saturday,” reads a statement on the club’s official website.
“We inform you that Tito Vilanova needs further treatment which makes it impossible for him to continue as coach.
“A new coach will most likely be presented at the beginning of next week.
“This is a big blow for us, but Barça have received many blows and have always overcome them.”
Vilanova’s cancer has twice gone into remission and this last treatment in New York was expected to eliminate the cancer permenantly, but it has been confirmed by the club that it has returned and Vilanova chose to put his health has the priority and allow the club to continue without disruption before the season begins.
