In bizarre accident, pickup lands on roof

After waking up Friday morning and starting to play a few video games, 14-year-old Brady Campbell heard what sounded like a grenade exploding outside his family’s second-floor apartment on Skyles Place in Whitefish.
“I heard a big boom. It rumbled the whole house. It knocked the speakers off the shelf,” said Brady, who was home alone.
He called his father, Shawn, at work and said he didn’t want to go outside to see what was going on because he was afraid.
But it wasn’t a grenade.
Or even a fallen rock, as his father first suspected.
A Toyota pickup truck had landed on the
apartment’s roof around 11:30 a.m.
“He said, ‘It was bigger than a rock, Dad.’ So I just stayed on the phone with him,” Shawn Campbell said of the unexpected conversation. “Then he said, ‘There’s a truck on the roof,’ and I said, ‘What? I’ll be right there.’”
Someone had left the truck parked at a building uphill from the apartment.
The unoccupied truck either slipped out of gear or was not left in gear, started rolling down an alley, got some momentum and made it over a concrete barrier behind the apartment, crashing onto the apartment roof right above Shawn Campbell’s bedroom.
Authorities were working to remove the roofed truck Friday afternoon. No one was injured in the incident.
Shawn Campbell planned to put the family up for a night in a hotel where he works and then leave for a week of vacation this weekend as planned. The apartment is a rental property, so he’s hoping the unusual incident will be all cleaned up by the time they return.

“Definitely something you don’t see every day,” Brady Campbell said.
