Ahead of this weekend’s Manchester derby, both City and United sit on exactly the same
amount of points after four games this season.
Both sides have also had a good week in the Champions League with comfortable victories to
kick off their group stage campaigns but is there much to be lost for either side from this
weekend’s clash?
After bouncing back from defeat at Anfield before the international break, a couple of wins for
David Moyes has given the feel of a bit more momentum around Old Trafford at the moment,
something that he will want to capitalise on this weekend. Wayne Rooney seems
to be firing
after a summer long ‘will he, won’t he?’ saga, and if they continue this weekend in the same
manner, there is potential for United to go on a run that could have a huge say in how their
season will finish.
City’s start has been stuttering, and with
them being the home side there is perhaps
more onus on them to take the game to
their near neighbours and look for the win.
City have yet to record back-to-back wins
in the early stages of Manuel Pellegrini’s
reign as manager but winning this game
could be a springboard for the rest of the
season.
For City to have a real tilt at the title, they
are going to have to produce some good
home form and if United were to land a
blow by taking all three points at the
Etihad Stadium it could prove to be one of
the more significant blows of the season.
If either side were to take three points, the winning manager would win some early brownie
points with the fans, perhaps Pellegrini needs them more than Moyes as the Chilean has
replaced a popular manager at the Etihad, when a large section wanted Roberto Mancini to
stay. Whereas Moyes seems to have a lot of United fans on side early and are in it for the long
haul with the former Everton boss.
It is a derby match, and there seems to be little doubt that these two sides will be in the
shake-up for the title towards the end of the season and even at this stage of the season it’s
a massive game.
Who has more to lose? Probably City, and out of the two managers, Pellegrini.
