Dog owners tend to have healthier hearts- AHA

Owning pets - especially dogs - is a good way to keep a healthy heart. That's according to the American Heart Association, whose researchers point out that dog owners were likely to get the recommended amount of weekly exercise. But the scientists can't say for sure which came first: the dog or the walk.

"It may be simply that healthier people are the ones that have pets, not that having a pet actually leads to or causes reduction in cardiovascular risk," head researcher Dr. Glenn N. Levine said in an American Heart Association statement in this month's journal Circulation.

Levine and his team reviewed several studies on the health of pet owners and found that they generally had lower levels of cholesterol, blood pressure and obesity, and often responded better to stress. One study of more than 5,200 adults found that dog owners were 54 percent more likely than non-dog owners to meet weekly recommended levels of exercise.

By the way, the CDC suggests 150 minutes of brisk walking or 75 minutes of running each week for most American.

Sunday’s convocation of Babcock University, Ilisan-Remo, Ogun State, was a full of emotions. For some, it was expectedly exciting. Shouts of joy, mixed with backslapping and hugging,all were not in short supply.

The cynosure of all eyes were,  however, a 20-year-old lady, Omobola Oduyoye, who emerged the best graduating student after scoring a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.92,.

Oduyoye, an indigene of Ilisan-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area of the state, was awarded a first class degree in Public Health.

Speaking with our correspondent after she received the Senior Vice-President’s Prize as the graduate with the highest overall CGPA, Oduyoye said commitment, discipline, hard work and focus – combined with what she called God’s grace – fetched her the award.

“Motivation from my parents, lecturers and course mates also helped me. Healthy competition from my course mates such as Akomolafe Damilola, who also obtained a CGPA of 4.60 , also enhanced my performance.

“I have a lot of respect for her because she is a mature married woman and a nurse. In spite of her age, she related well with us and she was very focused. Each time I looked at her, I felt like I should ask government to stop admitting fresh secondary school leavers straight into the university. They should be asked to do the A/Level or ordinary diploma programme before they enrol at the university,” she said.

A South African magistrate has postponed the murder trial of global sports star Oscar Pistorius until August 19 after lawyers asked for time to prepare for the case.

The 26-year-old Pistorius, the double-amputee Olympic sprinter charged with the murder of his girlfriend, appeared at a pre-trial hearing in a South African court on Tuesday.

Michael Douglas Claims Oral Sex Caused His Throat Cancer

Douglas explained that his particular form of throat cancer was caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) that was contracted from "cunnilingus" aka oral sex on a female. Douglas says, "It's a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer. If you have it, cunnilingus is also the best cure for it."

HPV is also known to cause cervical and anal cancer.

Douglas was diagnosed with stage four throat cancer in 2010. He underwent weeks of radiation and chemotherapy. He has now been cancer free for over two years. Speaking on his treatment, Douglas said, "That's a rough ride. That can really take it out of you. Plus the amount of chemo I was getting, it zaps all the good stuff too. It made me very weak."

Douglas and his second wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, have two children, ages 10 and 12. Douglas has an older son, Cameron, from a previous marriage. In 2010, Cameron was sentenced to five years in prison for drug possession and dealing. His sentence was extended until 2018 after he pleaded guilty to possessing drugs in prison.

"Unapologetic" hit the million mark in its 27th week, after selling another 9,400 copies during the week ending May 26, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
